Tony Finau won the 3M Open with a late charge
Tony Finau won the 3M Open with a late charge, while Scott Piercy faltered down the line, and the winner was announced at 1:38 AM Eastern Standard Time. Tony Finau was surprised to see that he was the betting favorite for the 3M Open, and as he attempted to continue the momentum he has built up over the course of this summer, he felt the strain mounting in his head. His third win on the PGA Tour came about as a result of his playing catch-up with the competition.
At the windy TPC Twin Cities, Finau fired a 4-under 67 to win the 3M Open by three strokes, overcoming a five-stroke deficit with 11 holes play as Scott Piercy fell out of the lead.
“I anticipated myself to compete and win again this year,” said Finau, who completed the competition with a score of 17 under par 267. “To be able to achieve it this late in the season when you’re running out of tournaments and you put that sort of expectation on yourself, it’s very wonderful,” he said.
Emiliano Grillo (71) and Sungjae (68) finished in a tie for second place.
Piercy followed up his tournament record 54-hole total with a cringe-worthy 76 to tie for fourth place, four strokes behind the leader. With a score of 65, James Hahn rocketed up the leaderboard to tie Piercy and Tom Hoge (70) at 13 under par.
Piercy had bogeyed four of the first six holes before he imploded with a triple bogey on the 14th hole, which allowed Finau, who was playing in the previous trio, to grab the lead for good. Finau, who is 32 years old, was graciously congratulated by Piercy outside of the scoring tent after recording the biggest winning rally in all four iterations of this competition.

Tony Finau, whose previous triumphs were in 2016 and 2021, stated, “I’m about as excellent an illustration as any of how difficult it is to close the deal,” and he was right. He has ten finishes in second place and three finishes in third place. “It’s great to have the respect of the men that you’re playing against whenever you win one,” one player said. “Every time I win one, I feel like I’ve accomplished something.”
Family support
His wife and their five children provided, as one would expect, the most solid support. They remained with him in a rented home near to the course and accompanied him from the tee box to the green for the whole round. When Finau didn’t need to be thinking about his swing, he was able to take his mind off of it by going fishing and eating with his family.
“I am a wife’s husband. I’m a dad. They may consider me a buddy. According to Finau, “I try to have a nice time with them.”
After finishing in a tie for third place at the 3M Open in 2020, Finau moved up to 17th place in the FedEx Cup standings. He started the week with a position of 17th in the world.
Finau holed a birdie putt from 31 feet on the 15th green to increase his grasp on the lead. As he strutted confidently about the course in his thin 6-foot-4 frame, white cap, and aqua-striped polo, he was able to maintain his hold on the lead.
The most convincing evidence that this was Tony Finau’s day occurred on hole number 17. His tee ball hit the edge of the grandstand, ricocheted back onto the green, and rolled into the rough, which was just a few feet from the ocean. He made par 3 by landing the flawless chip within a foot of the hole, and then he playfully clasped his palm on his chest as if to pretend the sequence caused him to have heart problems. He grinned slightly as he did this.
Tony Finau was confronted with one more obstacle when he encountered water off the tee of the difficult par-5 18th hole. But Finau made a bogey putt from three feet out to clinch the deal as Piercy was watching from the fairway. He gave a few vigorous pumps of his fist, removed his hat, and then strode out to meet his loved ones in the family.
After shooting a 65 on Thursday, Piercy and Im were tied for the lead in the opening round. However, Piercy moved ahead of the competition with a 64 on Friday, giving him a three-shot advantage heading into the weekend. After suffering through a severe heel blister and a 6-and-a-half-hour rain delay on Saturday, he was able to extend his advantage to four strokes.
That was nothing in comparison to the struggle that he found himself in on Sunday. After six holes, he was 20 under par for the round. A little under an hour later, Piercy found himself in a sticky situation. After having just three bogeys through his first 61 holes, he finished with seven scores that were higher than par on his last 11 holes. That tally included the seven he submitted on hole No. 14.
Piercy hit
The tee shot that Piercy hit ended up in the fairway bunker, and he was unable to get out of the sand with his sand wedge. His second attempt from the bunker splashed in the water short and left of the green, as opposed to the safer play that would have been to the right of the green. This was a hazardous, last-ditch attempt to get back on track. After the drop, Piercy was forced to play in the rough. After that, his subsequent try fell three inches shy of the cup.
Piercy was eliminated from the competition for the fourth time in six attempts despite holding or sharing the lead after the first three rounds of the competition.
The Argentine golfer Grillo, who finished tied for second at the John Deere Classic three weeks ago, also suffered a triple bogey on the seventh hole, which resulted in a score of 7. This score had a significant role in the final outcome. This week on tour had 303 balls in the water, which was the most out of any week all season.
According to Grillo, “Tony Finau pushed pretty hard on the gas, and he just made it very difficult for everybody.”
