Coy Gibbs passed away. He was a successful NASCAR driver and football player who followed in his father’s footsteps. He was 49. Joe Gibbs Racing, where Gibbs served as vice president and chief operations officer, released a statement on Sunday to acknowledge his passing. He saw his son Ty win the NASCAR Xfinity Division championship on Saturday at Phoenix Raceway.

“Coy Gibbs, the co-owner, passed away peacefully yesterday night, Joe Gibbs Racing has confirmed with deep grief. The family requests solitude at this time and appreciates any well wishes and prayers.

Ty Gibbs won’t be there for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series finale, according to 23XI Racing.

In Sunday’s final race of the season at the Phoenix-area track, he was supposed to be behind the wheel of the No. 23 Toyota. As a stand-in driver, Daniel Hemric, who won the Xfinity Series championship with JGR last year, was announced.

After concluding his college football player at Stanford, Coy Gibbs joined his father’s racing operation and has since become a mainstay. Coy Gibbs was a star defender for the Cardinal as well as its legendary coach Bill Walsh. After his father’s return to coaching in Washington, Coy Gibbs worked as an assistant coach.

Alongside his brother J.D., Gibbs performed front-office duties for Joe Gibbs Racing. Gibbs, who lost his battle with such a degenerative neurological condition in 2019 after a protracted illness. He also had a 49-year-old age.

In a statement, NASCAR CEO and Chairman Jim France said,

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Coy Gibbs. In memory of Coy, a great friend and racer, I offer Joe, Pat, Heather, the Gibbs family, and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing my sincere sympathies on behalf of the France Relatives and all of NASCAR.

“Racing is a family, and the bonds among everyone in the workshop go very much deeper than that on rivalry,” TRD Racing president David Wilson said in a statement. A precious member of our family passed away today. For everybody at Toyota and TRD, Coy Gibbs’ passing is tragic.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Joe, Pat, Heather, Ty, Case, Jett, and Elle, as well as the whole Gibbs family & Joe Gibbs Racing family.”

In a post-race press conference on Saturday, Coy Gibbs praised his son’s achievement, capping off a tumultuous day for the 20-year-old racer.

Ty Gibbs’ bumping of colleague Brandon Jones from such a berth in the league title field last weekend drew criticism and scrutiny which his father sought to assist him deal with in the lead-up to the final.

Coy Gibbs remarked, “Watching it today, sure, just to see his drive.”I believe he is skilled and determined. It undoubtedly gave me pride. Because he simply hammered down and completed his task, I believe that made my wife and I both proud. He will learn enough to do it if he intends to do something for a living.

Coy Gibbs competed in NASCAR races for his father’s team as well, coming in second place to David Stremme in the 2003 Xfinity Series Rookie of the Year standings.

In 2002, Coy Gibbs remarked, “After playing sports, I know I’m physically tough, emotionally tough, too. In this sport, you get severely beaten both on and outside of the track. But I enjoy difficulties. Becoming the youth coach for my father when I was younger was the most enjoyable thing I ever did. It is now operating a race car. What rivals that?
