Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, which is also his shortest, was written around 1605. Despite its briefness, the play is packed with thrilling events.

Shakespeare play’s narrative

The story’s events can be summed up as follows: a soldier named Macbeth went to three witches and was told that he would become king. This made the idea of assassinating the king circulate in his mind, and Macbeth actually planned for it with the assistance of his wife. They killed King Duncan while he was sleeping, and Macbeth took the throne in his place.

However, in order to protect his secret, Macbeth is compelled to murder an increasing number of people. As a result, he soon transforms from a valiant soldier into an evil tyrant. In addition, Macbeth starts to see the ghosts of the victims he murdered just as his wife starts to commit suicide. A new prophecy made by the witches claims that Macbeth’s king will vanish when the woodland next to his castle starts to move in his direction.

Shakespeare was Macbeth a bad guy?

Macbeth has undoubtedly committed sin. He has also murdered another man’s wife and children in addition to killing the noble King while he slept in his bed, the guards to help cover up the crime, and the noble King. But presenting a one-dimensional Macbeth would have prevented the play from being a success. Shakespeare employs a series of incidents to reveal Macbeth’s character, for instance:

Macbeth is portrayed at the play’s beginning as a hero who returns from combat victorious, and we witness this at the play’s conclusion when he battles until the bitter end despite knowing he cannot prevail. The three witches are attempting to persuade Macbeth to carry out his plan, and he might not have begun if they hadn’t informed him of the prophecy from the beginning. Macbeth required the encouragement of his wife, Lady Macbeth, who was in some respects even more ruthless than her husband, to urge him to complete his plot.

Throughout the play, it is clear that Macbeth struggles with guilt and that the control he attained through committing crimes did not make him happy.

The play’s emphasis on witches

As the ones who initiated the entire story, witches are crucial to the plot of the plays. However, they remain enigmatic throughout the play, and we never learn what they want. Instead, they pose the intriguing question, “Is this a real prophecy, or is it a self-prophecy arising from the whim of the soul?”

The real meaning of the prophecy: If the story is accurate, then none of the things that happen in the play are Macbeth’s fault; rather, they were all arranged as his unavoidable end. If witches are unable to foretell the future, they may have given Macbeth the notion, as his own drive to become king drove him to commit all the crimes.

Do you know Lady Macbeth?

Many believe that Macbeth’s wife is more evil than he is because, despite the fact that she did not murder anyone, she tricked Macbeth into doing it for her benefit. When Macbeth later feels bad and attempts to back down, she accuses him of not being a man enough.
