No Heart Transplant of Patient Refused COVID-19 Vaccine

A man’s family said he was denied a new heart because he refused to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 vaccine. Since then, a Boston hospital is defending itself. It claims that most transplant programs around the country have identical protocols to boost patients’ chances of survival.

Officials at Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Statement:

Officials at Brigham and Women’s Hospital told D.J. Ferguson he wasn’t qualified for the treatment. The reason was that he did not get the COVID-19 vaccine against the coronavirus. This is according to his family in a crowdfunding appeal this week.

Brigham & Women’s Hospital further stated that no patient is placed on an organ waitlist until they match those criteria. It however refuted Ferguson’s family’s claim that a transplant candidate is “first on the list” for an organ.

 

 

This is a situation that requires immediate attention “In a fundraising plea that has garnered tens of thousands of dollars, the family stated. “This isn’t merely a political problem. People must be able to make their own decisions.”

 

Claim By Tracey Ferguson, D.J.’s Mother:

Tracey Ferguson, D.J.’s mother, claims that her kid isn’t anti-vaccine. She added that he has previously received immunizations. The trained nurse, however, revealed on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. This is a heart rhythm that is irregular and often quick. He is concerned about the COVID-19 vaccine’s negative effects.

Patient confidentiality regulations prevented Brigham and Women’s Hospital from commenting on D.J. Ferguson’s case. However, it cited a comment on its website that stated that the COVID-19 vaccine is one of several immunizations that most U.S. transplant programs require. It further includes a flu shot and hepatitis B vaccines.

 

Health Organizations’ Recommendations:

 

According to the hospital, research has indicated that transplant recipients have a higher chance of dying from COVID-19 than non-transplant patients, and its policies are in line with the American Society of Transplantation and other health organizations’ recommendations.

 

“There are presently over 100,000 patients on organ transplant waiting lists. Moreover, there is a lack of suitable organs,” the hospital said. “Approximately half of those on waiting lists will not receive an organ within five years.”

Patients who do not have immunity against COVID-19are likely to deny transplants at hospitals in other states.

A Doctor Denied A Lady for not Getting Vaccinated:

A lady with late-stage kidney failure in Colorado claimed last year that her hospital denied her a donor. This was because she didn’t get the COVID-19 vaccine. Because of the significance that fetal cell lines play in the development of several vaccines.

Due to a shortage of donor organs, transplant institutions suffer the burden. They usually make list. This list prefers those whom doctors believe will have the best chance of surviving with a new organ.

Dr. Howard Eisen, medical director for Penn State University’s advanced heart failure center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, remarked, “A donor’s heart is a rare and limited gift that we must take care of.” “We want to keep patients alive and have favorable outcomes after transplantation.”

 

There is a crucial report by  Anne Paschke, a representative of Organ Sharing for the United Network. It says that the organization does not keep track of how many patients who refuse to receive the COVID-19 vaccine turned down for transplants.

Patients denied organ transplants have the freedom to seek treatment elsewhere, she said. Albeit individual institutions ultimately determine which patients to put on the national waiting list.

 

 

 

In late November, due to a heart condition D.J. Ferguson, his lungs filled with blood and fluid, according to the online fundraising. He then moved to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Their surgeons implanted an emergency cardiac pump, which the family claims is simply a stopgap.
