What are Metaverse Basics?

In a metaverse, people can connect in 3D virtual environments. A single, worldwide virtual world enabled by virtual and augmented reality headsets is often regarded as a futuristic or science fiction concept.

Because Second Life combined several components of social media into a  3D world with a user, it is often described as the first metaverse. Many massively multiplayer online games incorporate social elements. Minecraft’s dynamic, collaborative gameplay, according to tech journalist Clive Thompson, is an advanced model of a metaverse It was also used in marketing for the game Roblox. Games like Active Worlds, The Palace, and Fortnite also claim to have created a metaverse.

Facebook created Facebook Horizon in 2019, a social VR world. A metaverse was announced by Mark Zuckerberg in 2021, and Facebook was renamed “Meta Platforms” in the same year. Many of Meta Platforms’ stated virtual reality solutions are still in the works. Social media whistleblower Frances Haugen blasted the move, saying Meta Platforms’ continuous focus on expansion projects comes at the expense of platform security. Meta Platforms has also been criticized for user safety on Horizon Worlds because of sexual abuse..

It has now included metaverse elements like virtual avatars and virtual reality meetings into Microsoft Teams after acquiring VR company Artspace VR in 2017.

Transparency and privacy are important considerations in metaverse development. Several virtual environment standardization initiatives exist. A metaverse is a three-dimensional internet populated by real people, according to Second Life founder Philip Rosedale in a Wired interview from January 20, 2012.

Pixar developed Universal Scene Description, which is supported by Blender, Apple’s Scene Kit, and Autodesk 3ds Max. As of 2021, NVIDIA’s metaverse development tools will be available in USD.
