What’s the storey behind Netflix’s real crime documentary “Bad Vegan”?
The film tells the storey of Sarma Melngailis, the star chef of New York’s finest raw vegan restaurant, and how her empire fell apart after she met a man named Shane Fox on Twitter. Like The Tinder Swindler, Fox promised her the world and then destroyed her life.
Melngailis’ restaurant, Pure Food and Wine, first opened in New York City in 2004. It was regarded as one of Manhattan’s finest vegan fine-dining venues, promising tourists a “high-end, fine-dining vegan experience” and attracting celebrities like Owen Wilson, Bill Clinton, Alec Baldwin, and Woody Harrelson.
Melngailis first encountered Fox in 2011 when he contacted her over Twitter, promising to help her with her money problems and even promised to make her pet dog live forever (strange, we know) provided she complied with his requests. She began draining money from her business as the two became closer, believing he could change her life and fulfil all of her dreams.
After stealing $2 million from the restaurant and its employees, the pair married and went on the run from authorities a year later. Despite the fact that they were wanted for fraud and labour crimes, they went almost unnoticed in 2015. But it all came crashing down in 2016 when they were discovered at a Tennessee motel after Fox bought a pizza under his real name, Anthony Strangis, which led cops right to the couple.
Bad Vegan is said to be ‘fascinating,’ and it’s even more bizarre than The Tinder Swindler, according to critics
The critical reception to Bad Vegan appears to be positive. The “astonishing mix of facts the video manages to offer is not for nothing,” Variety said, adding that “anyone interested in hearing level-headed people remember watching their boss break down will be persuaded.” The series, according to TV Guide, features a “tastier” plot than past scam-based options. It goes on to say that Sarma Melngailis is “riveting” as a topic and that the show is “one of Netflix’s finest true-crime docuseries in recent memory.”
Many users on Twitter have compared the con narrative to The Tinder Swindler and claimed that it doesn’t add up. Others have recommended that everyone see the show “right now.”
