On the list of all-time goalscorers in the Champions League, Robert Lewandowski is currently in exclusive possession of the third-place spot. At Camp Nou on Wednesday, his new side opened their season in Europe with a 5-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen. In his debut appearance for Barcelona in the Champions League, Robert Lewandowski scored an outstanding three-trick.

After Franck Kessie gave Barcelona the lead in the 13th minute, Lewandowski took over as the player in charge. Before the break, he scored twice, sandwiching a goal from Jan Sykora that momentarily brought Plzen’s aspirations of salvaging anything from the match back into existence.

Lewandowski finished up his sixth hat trick in the Champions League around halfway through the second half, and then Ferran Torres added the finishing touches to the scoring with a thunderous volley.

As a result of Lewandowski’s hat trick, he has moved above Karim Benzema into sole possession of third place on the all-time scoring list for the Champions League with 89 goals. In addition to that, he achieved a milestone in the annals of the tournament by being the first player to ever score a hat trick for three separate teams. Since joining Barcelona in the summer from Bayern Munich, the Poland striker has scored eight goals in only five matches for the club thus far.

Action-packed first half

During the action-packed first half, many of Barcelona’s new free agents made immediate contributions to the team’s success. Kessie scored his first goal in the Champions League to start the scoring with a close-range header after another new newcomer, Jules Kunde, sent a corner kick in his direction.

What was the highlight?

The highlight of the lot was the first goal scored by Lewandowski in the 34th minute. After Sergi Roberto made his way through the center of the field, Lewandowski composed himself on the outside of the box and side-footed the ball with his signature precise precision into the bottom right corner of the goal.

When we got to the third minute of stoppage time in the first half, he had an easier job. Ousmane Dembele did the brunt of the work, getting the ball back on the right side before providing a superb cross that left Plzen’s goalkeeper stranded and giving Lewandowski the opportunity for a simple stooping header at the back post.

Plzen caused a few scares for the home team in the first phase of play before the scoreline grew out of hand for them. The Czech Republic’s reigning champions were given a penalty kick in the 24th minute, but it was overturned after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) determined that Jhon Mosquera’s elbow had struck Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen in the face before the Plzen forward was brought down in front of the goal.

Sykora tipped in a cross from Vaclav Jemelka to give Plzen the lead in the 44th minute, but Lewandowski quickly made sure that it wouldn’t matter much by scoring again shortly after.

After restoring, Lewandowski put the match out of reach with another perfectly-placed shot from just beyond the box in the 67th minute. This goal came after he had restored Barca’s two-goal advantage. The player who was responsible for setting up that attempt, Torres, later scored a goal of his own with an incredible volley from Dembele’s chipped pass over the defense.

“It was a full game, and we overpowered them,” Xavi said after the game.

“They did a good job of defending and man-marking us, but Dembele and Lewandowski were outstanding and made the difference. We were the better team, and I’m proud of all of our players, even those who came off the bench and those who began the game. Everyone was tremendously excited about the opportunity.”

The following week on Tuesday, Barcelona will play their next game in the Champions League when they travel to play Lewandowski’s previous team, Bayern Munich. On the same day, Plzen will compete against Inter Milan, the last club in Group C.
