Neocolonialism, division and togetherness among African diasporans, and the proliferation of rappers on Soundcloud in the late 2010s were among the many themes of the first Black Panther. But its most powerful subject was the tale of T’Challa becoming his own boss and his own man.

The soundtrack to the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

In the record-breaking Marvel blockbuster in 2018, T’Challa had just taken the throne of Wakanda & spent the most of the movie dealing with the fallout from his ancestor’s deeds. In the end, T’Challa murders his rebellious cousin Killmonger before heeding his counsel and, for the first time, opening Wakanda’s borders to the outside world. With a focus on Black people and Wakandans who have been forcibly expelling from their homeland.

The same major problem is inverting in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Actor Chadwick Boseman lost his battle with colorectal cancer in 2020, and Wakanda is in disarray without their warrior king. T’Challa is no longer alive. Letitia Wright as Princess Shuri, Angela Bassett as Queen Ramonda, Lupita Nyong’o as spy Nakia. Also Danai Gurira as general Okoye strive to put everything back together and repel invaders. Including some from Talokan, an underground civilization headed by Namor (Tenoch Huerta). Wakanda Forever has a more gloomy tone than the original due to the burden of inheritance. That everyone involved must bear in the wake of T’Challa’s death.

Wakanda Forever also lacks a celebrity curator, contrasting Black Panther The Album.

The entire production was handled by director Ryan Coogler & composer Ludwig Göransson, who recorded almost 2,500 hours of music throughout three continents. Göransson spent some time in Mexico City & Lagos getting to know local instruments & sounds, and the extended roster of voices adds richness to the soundtrack’s strongest tracks.

The musical variety in Wakanda Forever is astounding. Also its best tracks both describe their individual civilizations and significant scenes in the film. The mournful vocals of artist Mare Advertencia Lirika and Mexican vocalist Vivir Quintana. It is over the heavy rhythms and shakers in “rboles Bajo El Mar” enhance Namor’s birth scenario. Moreover, Key passages in Talokan & Wakanda are accompanied by the aquatic synths of “Con La Brisa” by Foudeqush and Göransson and “Coming Back For You” by Fireboy DML, respectively.

With the exception of the uninspiring ranting of Tobe or Big Nwigwe on the chasing scene song “They Want It, But No.” the majority of the songs. Featuring in the actual movie function both within and outside of their cinema context. Conjuring up the appropriate images in your head with each viewing.

The album’s remaining songs fall more evenly between those that are “from” and “inspiring by.”

The album’s two most famous songs, Tems’ rendition of Bob Marley’s classic “No Woman, No Cry.” and Rihanna’s Chadwick Boseman tribute “Lift Me Up.” are both competent ballads. That will be playing repeatedly during the fall season at your neighbourhood mall. Furthermore, Snow the Product and E-40 give “La Vida” a contagious Bay Area spirit that isn’t quite transferring to Oakland. Singer OG DAYV’s “Limoncello,” which is accompaning by such an autopiloting Future line.
