Booker 58 Points Propel Suns: Stunning Comeback Victory

Two Pelicans pursued Devin Booker as he swished forward towards the left corner 3-point mark before rising for an off-balance jump shot. That wasn’t something coach Monty Williams thought was a good idea.

 Williams remarked, smirking, “I couldn’t make that shot.”

Although Booker can. And he did.

On Saturday night, the Phoenix Suns defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 118-114 thanks in large part to the performance of the three-time All-Star, who scored 58 points in one of his best scoring performances of his career.

Less than a week had passed since the Suns’ two Pelicans losses in New Orleans before they managed the comeback victory. Booker takes great pleasure in being a team player as well as a willing distributor, but on Saturday evening he understood he was holding the advantage.

Blasting over a hand is the appropriate move, according to Booker, when I get it going a little.

This is Booker’s second game over 50 points this year; on Nov. 30 against Chicago at home, he scored 51 points in just three quarters. At Boston in March 2017, he scored a career-high 70 points, and at Utah in March 2019, he scored 59 points.

With this performance, the Suns overcame a 24-point deficit. Three-time All-Star scored 21 of 35 attempts, scoring 6 of 12 three-pointers. He participated for the entire second period and added five rebounds and five assists.

The Phoenix bench & spectators relished every second of it. a. New Orleans Not at all. Guard C.J. McCollum of the Pelicans remarked, “I don’t like watching anyone score 58 runs on us. “It is not fun.” The Suns utilizing a 25-6 run to reduce the Pelicans’ advantage to 89-84 heading into the fourth quarter from the Pelicans’ 83-59 lead at the halfway point of the third quarter. With 20 points during the third, Booker helped his team get back into the game.

Josh Okogie’s foul shot with 7:04 remaining gave Phoenix the lead, 99-99. Before Okogie’s two free throws, Booker scored an incredible 25 points in succession for the Suns, nailing virtually every shot he attempted toward the basket as the hometown crowd erupted in jubilation.

With 1:04 left, Paul hit a critical 3-pointer to give the Suns a 111-109 lead. Paul had 18 points and 8 rebounds in the end.

In contrast to the Pelicans, who have now lost three straight games, the Suns have won two straight games. Zion Williamson scored 30 points to lead the Pelicans, and McCollum scored 27. Williamson played well, making 12 of 15 shots from of the field, but Booker’s performance utterly eclipsed it.

Williamson advised showing respect when it was due. He performed a clinic.

After one quarter, the Pelicans had a 34-27 advantage and were throwing 67% from of the field. With six of seven attempts, including three three-pointers, McCollum scored 15 points. By the half, New Orleans had widened its advantage to 63-46. The rest of the Suns only made eight of their thirty-one field goal attempts, compared to Booker’s 22 points on eight-of-13 shooting before the half.

Williams remarks, “If we had been on a sailboat, we couldn’t have throwing it in the water. Gilbert Arenas’ 54-point performance for Washington in 2006 served as the previous record for the arena, which Booker beat.
