The WNBA superstar, Brittney Griner’s arrest in Russia

After the WNBA superstar, Brittney Griner’s arrest in Russia was prolonged for another several weeks on Tuesday, her agent made a statement about the situation. According to a tweet that was posted by Kagawa-Colas, “today’s extension is only another reinforcement that Brittney Griner, an Olympian, and an American citizen, is being exploited as a political pawn.” “The way she is being held is cruel and cannot be tolerated. She has not received a single phone contact in the 117 days that she has been wrongfully detained, and we are calling on @POTUS and @VP to take quick action and do everything it takes to get Brittney home as soon as possible.”
What was she accused of?

Griner was detained in February on suspicion that she attempted to transport vape cartridges containing oils derived from cannabis through an airport in Moscow. Since then, she has not been allowed to have very many interactions with the general public. Griner’s arrest has been prolonged until July 2 by a court in Moscow. TASS, which is Russia’s state-run news agency, stated that this was the third time that her custody has been prolonged.

It has been rumored that Griner could be involved in a detainee swap involving Viktor Bout, who is currently serving the middle of a 25-year sentence in federal prison for conspiracy to kill Americans related to the support of a Colombian terrorist organization. The conviction that led to Bout’s sentence stems from the fact that he was found guilty of supporting the activities of a Colombian terrorist organization.
Sergei Ryabkov who is Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister said that the country’s government would not contemplate offering Griner in exchange for a prisoner in the United States “until a judicial examination into her case is concluded.”
