Sainz leads just behind Charles Leclerc, and Ferrari initially said he could “fight freely”, but the Italian team should pass Leclerc to avoid wasting time with Lewis Hamilton. I asked Sainz.

However, with the advent of safety cars, Ferrari brought Sainz into the pits for fresher, more grippy soft tires. Leclerc continued to wear old hard tires, and Sainz quickly overtook his teammates to regain the lead, winning his first victory in his 150th F1 start. “I did it. That’s right! I did it! That’s right! Vamos!” Sainz played Ferrari on the radio.

Sergio Perez passed Hamilton and Leclerc after the restart and crossed the second line after Sainz, but faced an investigation to cut the chicane. Hamilton was temporarily in 2nd place after passing both Perez and Leclerc in 3P, but was unable to maintain his position and fell to 4th place. After that, Hamilton attacked Leclerc and fought for third place. He also led the lap on Sunday for the first time this season. Leclerc was later seen personally spoken to by Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto.

F1 champion and current championship leader Max Verstappen lost the lead by damaging Red Bull after overcoming debris. He fought for grip and finished in 7th place.

There is no question that Sergio Perez deserves this honor, especially in light of what transpire to him following the restart after the red flag. His prospects of placing on the podium appearing to be almost completely over when a collision with Charles Leclerc damaging his front wing. But the late safety car really worked in his favor, and the Red Bull driver can be proud of his afternoon’s performance despite essentially starting from the back of the grid to earn a fantastic podium finish.
