The world’s most renowned music festival is back in full swing after two years of Covid-related cancellations. The rest of the live music industry follows Coachella’s lead. And Coachella’s opening day on Friday made a strong statement: Hundreds of thousands of (mostly maskless) festival-goers returned to the desert, demonstrating that the world’s grandest stages would no longer be limited. From standout performances to fashion trends to the parking lot from hell, here’s a look back at what we saw on the opening day of the festival.

Coachella 2022 – and Shania Twain — are among the guests at Harry Styles’ home.

Day One headliner Harry Styles seemed as loose as ever during an excellent headlining set that included a guest appearance from Shania Twain and the debut of two new songs off his upcoming album Harry’s House: “Boyfriend,” which featured beautiful multi-part harmony and plucking guitar as Harry crooned about the flaws of a bad boyfriend, and “Late Night Talking,” which featured Eighner’s Eighner’s Eighner’s Eighner’ At Coachella, watch Harry Styles perform a duet with Shania Twain and premiere new songs.

Twain and Styles sat in front of the stage after Twain’s surprise performance of “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” Twain’s 1998 song “You’re Still the One,” which Styles had previously played live with Kacey Musgraves. Styles credited Twain for teaching him how to sing. “She also instilled in me the belief that men are garbage.” Twain laughed, and the audience erupted in applause. Harry was being his usual jovial self elsewhere. “We’ve got 12 minutes — of dancing,” he declared approximately 40 minutes into his show, as the audience started to groan in protest; “I’m good at a lot of things, but not this.”

What is this pandemic, exactly?

Coachella 2022 organizer Goldenvoice said in February that all pandemic-related safeguards, including confirmation of vaccination and negative Covid testing, will be lifted for the event. A major concern among observers before to the event was how careful people would be about disguising and being cautious in the absence of any rules. As it turns out, not at all. We noticed hardly anyone wearing a mask among the tens of thousands of people who attended Coachella on the first day.

Idle Women Accept the Dress

It wasn’t Harry Styles, but a male performer who donned a dress during his Coachella 2022 concert. Mark Bowen, the guitarist for Idles, showed out in a flowing nightgown for the band’s furious performance, finally being carried offstage by the audience during the band’s performance of “Danny Nedelko.” Is there anything more punk rock than a guy shredding on guitar in a Little House on the Prairie-style dress? Bowen and vocalist Joe Talbot talked with Rolling Stone before their show on Friday afternoon about their spot on a festival lineup that was noticeably short on the rock. Both members scoff at the notion of representing a certain kind of music. “We’re a talisman of delight for us,” Talbot adds, adding that “violence and brightness survive.” Every night, we aspire to generate unrivaled energy. That doesn’t rock and roll; it’s simply Idles. We’re music aficionados who want to be on the cutting edge of everything, not just rock and roll.”

“I believe that tribalism in music has degenerated because to the internet and the way people consume music,” Bowen adds. It’s not so much that we’re different from Slowthai as it is the vibe. There are high-octane bands that you know will provide catharsis, and then there are performers like Phoebe Bridgers that have a different context. However, it is no longer a matter of genre.”

Anitta puts on a show that deserves to be in the news

During Coachella 2022 first night’s most energetic turn, Anitta brought the beauty and culture of Brazil’s favelas to the desert. Snoop Dogg smoking a joint during “Onda Different” was the perfect way to start her concert. And what would an Anitta concert be without a few booty-shaking lessons? Anitta actually got on a dancer’s back and shook her behind ceaselessly during her viral “Evolver” performance. She pulled out the Icy Grl herself, Saweetie, for a medley of dembow-filled tunes during “Faking Love,” before being joined by Diplo. Brazil was unmistakable.

Coachella Debut for Euphoria Fashion

Aside from the bucket hat, one of the most popular new looks at Coachella 2022 seems to reflect Gen Z’s ultra-popular Euphoria: a slew of ladies decked out in diamonds á la Hunter Schafer’s Jules character. Legions of Harry Styles followers arrived in full cosmic-cowboy regalia, replete with fuzzy cowboy hats and cow-patterned socks, boots, or shirts, in other locations.

Out There, Staying Safe

Win Butler unexpectedly interrupted during Arcade Fire’s first song, asking for medics to rescue someone in the audience, and the band didn’t even make it 15 seconds into their nostalgic performance. It was a welcome tone-setter, received with a shout from the audience, with the shadow of the Astroworld disaster still lingering over the live music business.

In the Desert, We Found Peaches

Fans at the main stage anticipated Justin Bieber’s entrance for a reprise of their smash team-up “Peaches,” after being tipped off by a TMZ article. An unexpected appearance by one of the world’s top male pop performers was a delightful addition to a Friday roster that was already jam-packed.

Pink is the color of royalty

If rap princess Nicki Minaj released Lil Baby, we were saving the title “Pink Friday.” She, on the other hand, failed to do so. (Coachella, please make Nicki Minaj a headlining act next year.) Please.) Instead, two of the night’s best crooners, Omar Apollo and Pink Sweat$, wore the color pink on Friday. Apollo wore a complete pink suit over a body-con tank top while performing songs from his new album, Ivory. “Where have all my gays vanished to?” Before singing “Killing Me,” Apollo smiled and remarked, “Am I going to become real hot in this bitch?”

Sweat$, on the other hand, kept things romantic by selecting a pair from the audience to serenade with his unrivaled vocals, throwing flowers into the throng, and performing “Waiting on You” with Sabrina Claudio.

Tejanas and Bucket Hats abound.

On Coachella 2022 opening night, several festival-goers wore bucket hats with Snoopy prints, camo designs, and purple cheetah patterns. As Grupo Firme and Harry Styles performed on the main stage, several fans wore customized cowboy hats, including string-light-decorated pink ones, traditional brown ones, and even throwaway plastic ones. It was the ideal, trendy shade from the sweltering heat, as well as an appropriate companion for a night of surprises.

Where are the Tóxicos located?

When Grupo Firme took the stage, Mexico’s pride showed brightly on the big stage. As the sun started to fall on the Coachella festival grounds, the regional Mexicano heavyweights came with accordions, tubas, and their unique attire. “We’re trying to convey what it means to be Mexican so people can perceive us in a new perspective — not in the conventional boots and cowboy hat sense,” Eduin Caz, the group’s leader, told Rolling Stone at Casa Google a few hours before their performance. “We wear different clothes and color our hair. “We’ve come to show off our origins,” said the group.

Earlier in the day, the band huddled by the pool negotiating last-minute revisions to their jam-packed setlist, which included a rendition of Karol G’s “Tusa” and their smash single “Ya Supérame.” “Our mission is to tear down obstacles.” There are no limits to what music can achieve. “We don’t have to alter in order for others to like us,” Caz stated. “We want the audience’s attention to be drawn to the stage.” That was certainly the case, as Spanish-speaking supporters chanted the songs and others watched in astonishment as the world’s largest Mexican band dominated the stage. During the show, fans waved Mexican flags and delivered their best grits, while the band’s core members drank shots and chugged beers. “Arriba Mexico, cabrones,” Caz said on stage.

Parking After the End of the World

“Exiting the Coachella 2022 parking lot is equivalent to Mad Max: Fury Road,” one festival-goer tweeted in the early hours of Saturday, neatly encapsulating the dreadful circumstances we, too, encountered traveling to and from the festival. As we prepare to return and repeat the process, we’re hoping for simpler logistics tonight.
