History:
Duke basketball was first established in 1905, but it was not until the arrival of coach Eddie Cameron in 1928 that the program began to find success. Cameron led the team to three Southern Conference championships before retiring in 1942. The program continued to be competitive throughout the 1950s and 1960s, but it was not until the arrival of coach Mike Krzyzewski in 1980 that Duke basketball truly became a powerhouse.
Krzyzewski, known as “Coach K,” has been at the helm of the duke basketball program for over 40 years. During that time, he has led the team to 12 Final Four appearances and five national championships (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015). He has also coached numerous All-Americans, including Christian Laettner.
Traditions:
as the “Cameron Crazies.” The Crazies are a group of students who attend every home game and are famous for their wild and creative cheers and chants. They often wear blue face paint and outrageous outfits to show their support for the team.
Another Duke basketball tradition is the “K-Ville” line. The line is a group of students who camp out in tents outside Cameron Indoor Stadium to ensure that they get the best seats for home games. The tradition began in the 1980s and continues to this day, with students sometimes camping out for weeks in advance of big games.
