GAME RECAP: EAGLES 31, 49ERS 7

The Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in the AFC Championship on Sunday as Harrison Butker kicked his goal with three seconds remaining on the 45-yard field to give the Chiefs the win. Trent Williams and Quvon Wallace’s departures raise tensions

The 49ers are frustrated. After a six-yard run by Christian McCaffrey, a scrum ensued in midfield that eventually saw Kubon Wallace and Trent Williams exchange shots, sending both players off. When play resumed, a safe Reed Blankenship messed with Deebo Samuel and brought him back. It was still the fourth game, but the Eagles took over at San Francisco’s 31-yard line.

THE EAGLES START PULLING THE STARTER. EXTEND THE LEAD TO 31-7

After a turnover on downs, the Eagles were down for eight straight runs – all by Kenneth Gainwell – setting up a 31-yard field goal from Jake Elliott with 5:17 in the game.

The Eagles pulled All-Pro tackle Lane Johnson before the drive. Left guard Landon Dickerson retired with an undisclosed injury.

AVONTE MADDOX AND FLETCHER COX STOP THE 49ERS ON FOURTH DOWN

The 49ers, down 28-7 early in the fourth quarter, went for it on 4th-and-2 from their own 47.

With quarterback Brock Purdy unable to throw due to his elbow injury and Josh Johnson officially out with a concussion, wide receiver Deebo Samuel took the handoff and was swarmed by Fletcher Cox and Avonte Maddox for a loss of 4 with 10:52 left in the game.

EAGLES EXTEND LEAD TO 28-7 AS JALEN HURTS GETS GOING ON THE GROUND

With the 49ers’ offense limited by Brock Purdy’s elbow injury, the Eagles nursed the ball for a 15-play, 91-yard drive that lasted 7:50 and ended with a quarterback sneak by Jalen Hurts to make it 28-7 with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

A roughing of the kicker penalty on the 49ers extended the drive, then Hurts ran for 12 yards, 2 yards, and 14 yards on consecutive plays. The third play enjoyed a bonus after 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga pushed Hurts after he was already out of bounds. The Eagles’ fourth rushing touchdown set a single-game playoff record. Hurts’ touchdown was his 15th rushing touchdown in a season, including the playoffs, and the most by a quarterback in NFL history.

JOSH JOHNSON WAS RULED OUT BY THE REFEREE. BROCK PURDY IS BACK

On his drive in the opening of the third quarter, defensively his tackle Dum Consu knocked quarterback Josh Johnson down. The referee felt that Johnson should be check for head injuries. Brock his Purdy returned to the game for the first time since the 49ers’ first drive.

Let’s take a look at the halftime stats as the Eagles lead 21-7. The Eagles have led the 49ers in first downs (15-7), and total yards (166-117), and achieved his perfect 3-for-3 in the red zone. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has 97 yards, which puts him 13th of 19. He was holding at -1 rushing yards. Wide receiver Devonta Smith leads the Eagles with 29 receiving yards. Dallas Gaudart has 23 yards and has 5 catches and A.J. Brown has 28 yards and he has 4 receptions.

Myles Sanders running back has 39 yards on 10 carries and 2 touchdowns. Kenneth Gainwell gained 21 yards on his three carries, and Boston his Scott scored his third touchdown for the team on his only official carry. Herson Reddick had an unforgettable first half with three tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Javon Hargrave hit a pass and a sack. ANY ROOM FOR BOSTON SCOTT’S GIANT KILLER MONIKER TO ADD HIS 49ERS?

In two snap sequences, Scott served a facemask penalty to his 49ers linebacker, Dre Green Row, to get the ball to his 10-yard line in San Francisco. In the next game, Scott took the handoff and quickly ran into the end zone with 16 seconds left to make it 21-7, the Eagles. Eagles recover from fumbling Josh Johnson

Two games after the touchdown, Josh Johnson rocked the snap and fell to the ground and was recovered by Herson Reddick at the 49ers’ 30-yard line with 1:11 of the first half. Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell help the Eagles regain the lead

The Eagles responded to the 49ers’ touchdown drive with a touchdown of their own to regain the lead. Myles Saunders scored his second touchdown of the game. This time, they snapped a 13-yard streak with 1:36 in the first half to make it 14-7 for the Eagles. Sanders’ run ended his 75-yard drive in 14 plays past 6:53 am. The Eagles were also helped by his three 49ers penalties. Gainwell had three consecutive carries on the drive, gaining 9, 4, and 17 yards to put the Eagles in goal position.

CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY TIED ON HIS 23-YARD TD RUN

Even in Brock Purdy’s absence, the 49ers have maintained a balanced approach thanks to Christian turning his McCaffrey back. McCaffrey broke a string of tackles en route to a 23-yard touchdown run to make it 7–7 with an 8:29 first-half lead. McCaffrey gained an extra 21 yards from a touchdown with three touchdowns and two short receptions.

JAVON HARGRAVE DRIVE

The defense held up well after his position on the field for the 49ers. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave dismissed Josh Johnson and knock down a Johnson pass on the next play to force a punt, which was caught fairly by Britain Covey at the Eagles’ 6-yard line.

ON-THE-LINE

A strange sequence at the end of the first quarter. It looks like Brett Kern’s punt hit his Skycam cable on his FOX. The referee could not confirm it. Also, Zeck McPherson was out for illegally using his hand on a punt, so the 49ers start the drive in midfield. The first quarter ended with the Eagles leading 7-0. Brock Purdy is out

It’s doubtful the rookie quarterback will return with a right elbow injury. Josh Johnson is the quarterback. Purdy was injure in Reddick’s strip-sack.

HERSON REDDICK FENDS OFF THE BALL

The league leader in regular-season strip sacks ended the 49ers’ inaugural drive. Linebacker Herson Reddick punched quarterback Brock Purdy when he tried to throw the ball, causing Purdy’s arm to go to the front. I jerked the ball when it moved to the right. T.J. Edwards almost made an interception before head coach Nick Siriani challenged and won. The Eagles took over at 44 as Edwards made a full recovery.  The Eagles were three-and-out and couldn’t take advantage of an early turnover.

EAGLES TAKE HIS 7-0 LEAD

Wide receiver Devonta Smith was brilliant on 4 and 3. He made a 29-yard catch and put the ball on his line for his 6 yards for the 49ers. Two plays later, Myles Saunders ran the ball down the middle to score the game’s opening point. The Eagles return with injuries to Brown Fred Warner on Boston Scott’s 29-yard kickoff return and A.J.

On his second play from scrimmage, Miles Saunders, whose shotgun was out, middle his linebacker Fred Warner suffer a stabbing wound. He lay briefly on the ground before jogging to the sidelines. After going to the blue tent, Warner missed two of his games and came back.
