Jennifer Lawrence Talks about Her New Film’s “Very Personal” Motivation

It’s the first project from Lawrence’s production business, Excellent Cadaver, and it premieres next week in Toronto. “I’ve had a pretty continuous theme in all my movies since I was 18,” she told the magazine, before declining to elaborate because the subject was “extremely personal.”

But Lawrence, who was never excellent at censoring herself, later elaborated.

“Art is usually about one’s mother,” she tells Vogue. “I hesitate to say that because I don’t want someone to go back and see my movies — especially this one — and think that’s how I’m portraying my mother.” My mother is an amazing woman. But it doesn’t mean I’m not working on stuff from my childhood.”

Lawrence plays an Afghanistan veteran who returns to her hometown after suffering a severe brain injury in Causeway. Certainly, the film is about acute post-traumatic stress disorder. There are also hints of childhood trauma.

“Her unsustainable household, her unwillingness to commit to one thing or another due of these internal hurts. That are utterly invisible but tremendous — I believe I connecting with that at that exact period in my life,” Lawrence explaining. “I didn’t know how much was going on with me at the moment.” Until I returned, pregnant, married, and working on the film. And I was thinking, “Oh, this is a woman who is afraid to commit.”

As a result, she stated, “I get emotional every time I see the movie.”

Lawrence mused aloud about the family-of-origin dynamics she sees underlying her film choices, saying.”I’m curious if, now that I’m older and have a baby, I’ll finally break out of it.”In February, she and husband Cooke Maroney had a son, Cy, who she disclosing is named after Cy Twombly.

“The morning after I gave birth. I felt like my entire life had started over.” Like, today is Day One of my life. I just stared. Furthermore, I was head over heels in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere. Newborns are incredible. They’re these pink, bloating, frail little survivors.”
