Listeriosis outbreak: What is it? Development and How to Prevent it

The listeriosis outbreak, which DNA reports have a common, undisclosed cause, has sickened 22 people in 10 states, including one resident of Illinois, and claimed one life.

To identify the foods that causing the ailment, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is looking into the multi-state Listeria monocytogenes outbreak that may have a connection to Florida.

The CDC said that as of June 29, an outbreak had sickened 23 people across 10 states, with one of them passing away.

“We report that 20 patients living or travelling to Florida the month before they got sick, but the significance has not yet been determining,” officials said in an ongoing investigation.

Furthermore, Patients’ ages range from infancy to 92 years old, according to the CDC. 72 years old on average. Approximately half are guys. 22 patients were also hospitalizing. Similarly, Illinois reported a death. Five pregnant women fell unwell as a result of the outbreak, and one of them lost a child to Listeria. Moreover, DNA fingerprints, according to officials, show that “individuals with this illness presumably got sick from the same food.”

The outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes has association with a variety of foods over the years, including hard meats, hot dogs, dairy products, and products. Recent outbreaks are associating with things for example,  soft cheeses, celery, bean sprouts, honeydew melons, and ice cream. And this week, Listeria isn’t the only one making food-related headlines. Food Safety News reported that Barry Callebaut, a Belgian chocolate factory, stopped production at one of the Belgian factories after discovering Salmonella. This factory is said to be the largest chocolate factory in the world, and the lecithin used to thicken chocolate contained impurities.

No tainted goods are believed to have reached customers in the Belgian case.

The candy factory contamination serves as a reminder that a variety of foods can cause disease. According to experts, there are numerous varieties of food-borne germs, making measures and safety monitoring crucial.

Development of listeria

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that causes listeriosis. It usually comes from eating contaminated food. For example, Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weak immunity are especially at risk. Listeria rarely makes other groups of people sick.

Symptoms in pregnant women are usually mild, but fetuses and newborns as well can become seriously ill. Elderly people and people with weakened immunity can develop brain infections such as sepsis, meningitis, and encephalitis. Listeria can affect bones, joints, chest, and abdomen. Bacteria are present in soil, water, and animal feces.   The most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

Moreover, It can take several weeks after eating contaminated food to develop symptoms, making it difficult to identify the source of the bacteria. About 1,600 people in the United States have listeriosis each year.  According to a New York Times article, “The CDC states that people at high risk of infection or symptoms should consult a doctor, especially if they have recently traveled to Florida.”

Preventing listeria

According to the CDC, there are precautions you may take to keep yourself safe. For example:

• Be sure to only eat dairy products made from pasteurized milk.
• Skip the raw sprouts.
• Avoid cutting melons that have been out of the fridge for more than four hours.
• Avoid getting hotdog or lunch meat juice on countertops, cutlery, or other food or prep items. After handling any type of meat, wash your hands.
• Unless it is in a cooked meal, people in high-risk groups should avoid cold fish that is not canned or marked as shelf-stable.
• Avoid cross-contamination by washing your hands properly.

Similarly, Current outbreaks have been reporting in 12 cases in Florida and 2 cases each in Network and Massachusetts.  According to the CDC outbreak map, one case is in many cities for example,  Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Furthermore, Forbes now has other outbreaks in Florida, including “recent outbreaks of meningococcal disease, at least 41 monkeypox cases, and the current surge in COVID-19.” It is the third most abundant state. ” All 50 states in the US will be adding. The state since the pandemic began. ”
