Manti Te’O: The Reason Why He didn’t Go to BYU?
A New Netflix documentary looks back on Manti TE’O football career. Former Notre Dame and his NFL linebacker Manti Te’o is back in the news this week after Netflix released a documentary about his catfishing saga.

The film brought renewed attention to his college career, and many of his BYU fans took notice. In the Netflix documentary, Te’o says he was recruited by nearly 50 schools. From the beginning, Te’o was most interested in the University of Southern California, which he loved as a child. He told his parents and friends in the documentary that he was going to play for USC before asking God for assurances that it was the right move.
“I told my family I was going to SC. My dad said, ‘OK, that’s good. Be sure to pray about it. ’ The next day, I sat in class and said, But if you want me to go somewhere, please help me. ”
Shortly after chanting this prayer, Te’o met a mentor and friend who had helped him throughout his high school football career. Te’o tells him that he plans to join USC, but the man’s reaction puts him on track.

“He said, ‘If I go to SC, I’m going to be the next great Polynesian footballer. I always thought I’d go to a place like Notre Dame, the only Manti he would be Te’o.'” Te’o remembered him on Netflix. Te’o said he understood his comment as a message from God.
Furthermore he says, “I got up and left the room and knew it…I knew the Lord was going to say something to me,” he said. . Deseret News wrote about this prayer story in 2012, saying that despite being convinced that Notre Dame Cathedral was the right choice, the rejection of schools like USC and BYU weighed heavily on Te’o’s mind. I pointed out that
“He’s one of those things you won’t know until years later if he made the right decision,” Te’o’s high school coach, Kale Ane, said of Te’o’s no to BYU. Moreover, Te’o said at the time that part of the process of praying for guidance is having the courage to accept the answers you receive. “My father always told me that the most difficult thing about asking the Lord for advice is not necessarily to kneel and pray but to have the courage to act on the answers you receive.
