The Australian Open confirmed on Monday that local favourite Nick Kyrgios had withdrew due to a knee injury.

On Day 1 at Melbourne Park, Kyrgios, the top-ranked male tennis player from Australia, convened a spur-of-the-moment press conference to explain that a routine MRI had shown a tiny tear and a cyst in his lateral meniscus

“I’m in shock. It’s harsh, “Kyrgios, who had the 19th seed, stated.

“Since this is my local competition, it goes without saying that I played my best tennis ever and won the doubles event last year. I’ll just have to try my hardest to return.”

In a charity match on Friday night at Melbourne Park, Kyrgios, 27, took on nine-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic. Will Maher, his physiotherapist, claims Kyrgios “didn’t pull up great” from the demonstration and wasn’t fit to compete in a Grand Slam match.

In order to test Novak’s ability to perform at a high level, Maher remarked,

“We used the charity tournament against him.” “It’s been a rather interrupting and challenging introduction. Nick’s knee has been bothering him for the past week. His lateral meniscus has a minor tear. To see if he can return to the court, it was worthwhile to keep trying. To his credit, Nick made every effort to return to the court.”

After finishing his career-best year by winning the Australian Open doubles title with fellow countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios advanced to the Wimbledon final, where he ultimately lost to Djokovic.

Maher stated that Kyrgios should be eligible to compete by the hard-court tournament at Indian Wells, California, in March.

Kyrgios is anticipating to return to Canberra for surgery in the coming couple of weeks. “Of course, a range of feelings, but that’s life. It relates to the sport, “Kyrgios said. “I have no doubts I’ll regain my full strength.”
