Next week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will appear before Congress for the first time. Lawmakers are trying to figure out how to regulate artificial intelligence tools that are getting better and better very quickly.

According to a press release issued by the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, Richard Blumenthal (D) of Connecticut, and the Ranking Member of the subcommittee, Josh Hawley (R) of Missouri, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, whose company developed the generative artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, is scheduled to testify before the subcommittee on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.

The meeting, called “Oversight of AI”

Rules for Artificial Intelligence” will also feature Christina Montgomery, Vice President of IBM. It will also include Chief Privacy and Trust Officer, and Gary Marcus, Professor Emeritus at New York University.

NBC News got a copy of the invite. It says that it will happen the day after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman meets lawmakers from both sides of the aisle for dinner on Monday night after the votes. Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., is co-hosting the dinner. He told NBC News that the goal of the event is to “educate members”. It says that more than 50 politicians have already said they will be there.

Last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other tech CEOs met with Vice President Kamala Harris. The meeting was at the White House to talk about the risks of AI.
