Ordeal is getting ready to release Season 2 of the well-liked action and adventure WEBTOON after a successful Season 1. Che, a Caribbean lead character who wants retribution from his mentor’s unidentified killer, is the series’ main character. Ordeal is a webcomic that fuses genres and visual styles to provide a distinctive and captivating story. It is set in a universe full with strong “Kimyos” and breathtaking action scenes.
In an exclusive conversation with CBR, Ordeal creator Brent Bristol talked about the forthcoming Season 2 debut later this year on the Webtoon platform. He gave fans an early peak at the characters and topics they can anticipate in the upcoming season while taking them through his creative process and the creation of Ordeal. Bristol’s Webtoon adventure is described in a recently released video from Webtoon.
Brent Bristol: As a hobby, I’ve been drawing and making comics on standard computer paper ever since I was a young child. As I grew older, I wanted to develop my artistic abilities. I switched to digital art and bought a little tablet so that I could practise drawing. I started out really, really bad, but I got a little bit better. It wasn’t too difficult to switch from traditional to digital art. Although there is so much more I can do with digital art, it does require practise because there is a completely different learning curve. Although I still use the conventional back and forth, I really value the variety of options I have at my disposal.
What served as a foundation for the development of Ordeal?
I have always been a huge comic book and animation enthusiast. I like reading comic books from Marvel and DC, and later discovered anime and manga. That is my top influence and the subject of my passion. That comes naturally to me, so I include it into my story without even thinking about it. I wanted to create something based on what I liked because I’ve always loved and enjoyed it. I used to enjoy certain anime, manga, and comics as a child. Furthermore, I attempted to incorporate the things I enjoyed growing up into what I’m making now, being able to produce one for myself. Moreover, I suppose I’m doing it for myself, but I only wish that it would be warmly received by others.
How do you feel about Ordeal’s first season’s success? What goals do you have for the series in the future?
I was completely floored by the response I received for Season 1. Although Season 1 has been a while ago, I was given the opportunity to make changes and improve the aspects of it that I first disliked. Some things didn’t go down well, and the feedback made me aware of weaknesses I hadn’t noticed before. Leo, one of the main characters, has been praised by many viewers for being their favourite. In the initial incarnation, they didn’t get nearly enough of him. People appeared to like the changes when I went back and updated some things, adding more of him in response to the feedback.
I never expected to be doing this, so it was a wonderful experience for me to observe that. This was not intended to be a full-time endeavour, just a hobby. I’m really appreciative. Although it seems cliche, my fan following is what keeps me motivated. I did it for them, and their comments allow me to learn from my mistakes and make improvements.
Readers like Che’s character design, which you created. Could you describe your creative process and how you develop your distinctive artistic style?
My artistic style is a fusion of Western and Japanese styles. I combine anime with conventional Western comic art, which results in a blend of realism and a slight pushing of the envelope with goofy anime style. A character needs to be incredibly muscular if he can lift a car. I’m not afraid of the tough, muscular characters. Although I didn’t intend for the main character to look like me, I did use my face as a reference in the first few sketches I ever made because I was the only person in the room at the time. I remained with the layout I had drawn him in. After a while, I saw that he somewhat reminded me of myself, but it wasn’t on purpose. I continue with anything if I enjoy it and it appears to be cool enough.
What can viewers anticipate from Ordeal’s second season?
I adore adventure and action films. I enjoy watching exciting action and going on adventures. A Season 1 internal struggle was one of the things I included in Ordeal. The dispute was a small-scale family quarrel. I was able to complete and tie up the narrative in Season 1, even though I introduce ideas about how the universe is far larger than the primary characters realise. I’m able to segue into season two and expose you to the next phase, which is the expansion of the universe, because I first revealed the expansion in season 1.
Introducing the characters that people have been asking for is one of my favourite things to do. I saw questions like, “Who is this person?” and “Where is this guy?” For the readers, posting the episode is fantastic, but for me, the comments are the best part. As soon as an episode is released, I immediately visit the comments. I’m eager to hear feedback and learn whether folks liked it. I’m introducing the plot points and characters that fans are eager to meet in Season 2, which continues the narrative. I am eager to share with readers.
What would you like to say to readers before the release of Season 2 of Ordeal on the Webtoon platform?
I made sure Season 2 had a lot of action and a lot of the little things, like training arcs, that are necessary to aid the character and grow his experience. People want these items even if they may not necessarily need them. I made sure that the characters who were most anticipated had the most spectacular designs and made a grand introduction. I enjoy developing new characters, therefore I’m just eager to reveal the plethora of fresh faces Season 2 will bring. It will be fantastic. There will be a lot of action. I’ve stated it before and I don’t like happy endings.
On the Webtoon platform, you can read Ordeal Season 1 right now.
