WWDC 2022: OS and Apple Updates & Expectations
What to Expect at WWDC 2022: iOS 16, MacOS 13, Watch OS 9, and Possibly New Macs:
Apple’s 33rd Annual Worldwide Developers Conference is scheduled to kick off on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. Like the 2020 and 2021 events, it will be held digitally only. Thus, it’s free for all developers around the world to attend.
The main event will give us our first look at new OS updates, including iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9. There are also rumors that we might see new hardware. Here is a list of everything we know about this year’s event.
iOS 16
Most of the rumors about iOS 16 have been vague. Thus, we know little about the OS update at this point. In previous years, new versions of iOS have leaked earlier and given us a taste of the feature set to come, but that didn’t happen this year.
That said, we’ve heard a few rumors about what to expect, and much of the information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has reliable sources with information on Apple’s plans.
Rumored new features
Revised lock screen with wallpapers that have “widget-like capabilities.”
There will be “significant” improvements to notifications, although we don’t know specific details.
Messaging app with “social network-like functionality” with a specific focus on audio messages.
Health app with expanded sleep tracking and medication management functionality. Apple is working on a tool that will allow users to scan their pill bottles into the app, and new women’s health features are expected.
New Apple apps are in the works, with no further specific information.
Apple is also working on “new forms of system interaction,” but it’s not entirely clear what that means.
New types of Fitness+ and training.
Classic Apple Music app with an interface based on Primephonic, an app Apple acquired in 2021.
Possible features based on iPhone 14 rumors
Always-on display for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max (not available until September).
Likely revamped status bar interface for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to accommodate the punch-and-loop design expected to replace the notch on those devices.
The iPhone 14 is expected to have a feature that will automatically call emergency services when it detects a car accident. This would require new features in iOS 16.
Additionally, Apple could incorporate a satellite-based emergency capability into the iPhone 14 models, making them compatible with iOS 16. With this capability, iPhones would be able to send text messages in critical situations even when there is no mobile coverage. It would also report critical situations even when there is no cell coverage.
iOS 16 could include support for the buy now, pay later feature for Apple Pay that Apple is developing.
Similarly, it could introduce support for the hardware subscription program. It will allow customers to pay a monthly fee for an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

iPad OS 16
iPadOS 16 will get many of the new features introduced in iOS 16. However, Apple is also working on additional functionality specific to the iPad.
With iPad 16, Apple aims to make the iPad behave more like a laptop than a smartphone. The new iPad software will be one of the biggest updates announced at WWDC.
The update will feature a redesigned multitasking interface that makes it easier to swap tasks and see what apps are open. Moreover, it will allow users to resize windows. Apple also plans to roll out new ways for users to handle multiple apps at once, in what looks like a much more Mac-like multitasking experience.
Mac OS 13
We don’t know much about the feature set coming to macOS 13, as there have been few leaks. Rumored to feature a revised System Preferences interface. It will bring it more in line with the Settings app on iPhone and iPad, with the update to include individual settings organized by app.
